Part of a £16.5 million package of improvements, we were thrilled to work on this international development and help enhance the reputation of this gateway to the continent.
alsecco Airtec rain-screen cladding was specified by D5 Architects of Birmingham for the major development of the new terminal at Portsmouth International Port. The architects were looking for a highly durable material that also offered a natural variation to its finish, providing warmth and depth of colour.
Working closely with the Port, the architect identified Airtec natural stone as it could provide all these qualities plus the added benefit of being considerably lighter than solid stone.
The Port liked the ammonite and shell-like finish provided by the limestone mirage stone in the Airtec system. We also wanted to create a natural finish with colour variation, which this particular stone finish could ensure. We are delighted with the final result.
-Joel Kempsey-Fagg, Project Architect at D5
The new international terminal covers approximately 2,700m2 and has a modern glass and stone façade. Designed to accommodate 2,400 passengers, the building comprises a full height concourse and an observation balcony.
Installed by specialist building envelope sub-contractor T A Colbourne of Poole, Airtec stone is a lightweight system ensuring ease of installation and providing a creative and sophisticated façade. It is accurately engineered, despite the fact it is a natural material and offers outstanding final results for precise measurements.
